Egn Webcraft is the trading name of Egn Systems Limited . And Egn Systems is owned by me, Eugene Mulligan.

I’ve been plying my trade as a provider of IT solutions to businesses for well over twenty five years. For most of that time I’ve operated through either my own or co-owned businesses, providing bespoke solutions to clients both small and large.

Not surprisingly, my work in recent years has become increasingly web oriented. The more I delivered websites and web applications, the more I appreciated just how vital a medium the web is for pretty much all businesses. Obvious really.

Web visibility is not enough

If you don’t have a visible presence on the web then you’re probably at a massive competitive disadvantage. But “visibility” is only half the story. The other half is “capability”. Once found, your website must be capable of connecting with your visitors on multiple levels - usability, accessibility, readability, etc.

Or to put it another way:

• Web design and development = capability
• Search engine marketing = visibility

Making your website productive can involve many layers, each with its own inherent complexities – the appreciation of search engine rules and algorithms, the cost and rewards of paid search, the risks of doing more harm than good, the legal requirements of disability accessibility, the importance of web standards and so on. But can your business really afford to ignore them or get them wrong?

Crafting a successful website

Successfully addressing these layers is not a science, it’s a craft. There is no common set of objectives, no predictable outcome. Yes there are guidelines and rules – lots of them. But which ones apply to you? How should you interpret them?

My approach is simple and effective:

• Listen to the customer – understand their requirements and appreciate their situation.
• Devise a relevant, engaging message that will reach the widest possible audience by adopting best practice techniques for usability and accessibility.
• Blend with the search engines to deliver visibility – know which features to use and which features to ignore, and know how to do it correctly.
• Stick at it because keeping up with the search engines and reaching an ever-wider market is an ongoing process.

The result? A website that is tailored, affordable and effective.
